A first-term Member of the Finnish Parliament, Suldaan Said Ahmed has submitted a written question in which he demanded an increase in humanitarian aid and the speeding up of the preparation of a humanitarian visa.

The Parliamentarian, who is a Member of the Left Alliance has indicated his intention to run for next year’s Parliamentary election. He is among the 10 men from African backgrounds who will receive an award of excellence from Diaspora Glitz Magazine to mark the International Men’s Day.

According to his post on Instagram, the lawmaker whom many see as a role model opined that “as crises and conflicts intensify in the world, we must strive to promote the realization of human rights and improve people’s opportunities for a safe and dignified life.”
In this term of office, the appropriations for development cooperation and thus humanitarian aid have been increased, the refugee quota has been increased and international climate finance has almost doubled compared to the previous term. These decisions are proof that the government wants to act as a global bearer of responsibility, he said.

Many countries of the world are facing humanitarian crisis and pragmatic measures needs to be in place in other to alleviate the effect.

People facing systematic human rights violations, crises and conflicts must be offered more help than at present. A humanitarian visa would promote the actual possibility for people to seek protection in another country in accordance with the international provisions.

Recall that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently preparing a comprehensive reform of the Aliens Act, which may include the humanitarian visa.
MP Ahmed stated that preparing a humanitarian visa separately from the overall reform could promote the realization of people’s actual rights without jeopardizing the quality of the long-term and wide-ranging legal reform.
