The Chelsea Xabi Alonso appointment is reportedly close to completion after Chelsea F.C. reached a full agreement to appoint Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager.
According to reports from The Athletic, the Chelsea Xabi Alonso appointment advanced after the Spanish tactician accepted the opportunity to take charge at Stamford Bridge following discussions with the club’s hierarchy earlier this month. A four-year contract is now believed to be in the final stages, with an official announcement expected soon.
Chelsea reportedly intensified talks with Alonso after conducting an extensive managerial search that also included former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola among the leading candidates. However, the club eventually decided to move forward with Alonso as their preferred choice.
The 44-year-old manager has been available since leaving Real Madrid CF in January, despite having signed a three-year contract with the Spanish giants less than a year earlier.
Before his time in Spain, Alonso enjoyed major success with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, where he guided the German club to their first-ever Bundesliga title during the 2023/24 season. Under his leadership, Leverkusen completed the domestic league campaign unbeaten, earning praise across Europe for their style of play and consistency.
Alonso’s expected appointment would also mark a return to English football, where he previously spent five successful years as a player for Liverpool F.C.. During his playing career, he famously helped Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League in 2005.
