Afrobeats singer and producer Maleek Berry recently shared his experience with Davido during their early days as up-and-coming artists.
Speaking on the ’90s Baby’ podcast, the ‘Kontrol’ singer revealed that Davido pretended to be poor while they worked together in the same studio, despite coming from a wealthy background. Berry said he was shocked when he later visited Davido’s father’s mansion.
“I remember when Davido only had four thousand YouTube views. When he came to London, I would take him to the studio in Bermondsey to record,” Berry recalled. “We connected through one of his cousins via social media. Back then, he wasn’t known, and we were just two Nigerian guys passionate about music.”
Berry noted that Davido blended in with them like any other struggling artist, making his wealth a surprising revelation. “When I finally saw his dad’s mansion, I was taken aback. There’s rich, and then there’s Davido’s kind of rich!”
He also mentioned that it was Davido who later connected him with Wizkid.
