Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong says the Democratic Republic of Congo will present a formidable challenge in Sunday’s final of the FIFA World Cup Africa Playoff Tournament, but insists the Super Eagles have what it takes to triumph at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay El Hassan.
Both nations — with five African titles between them — meet in a high-stakes showdown that will determine Africa’s representative at the Intercontinental Playoffs for two remaining slots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.
“There is no doubt that the Congolese will be a big challenge. They are here because they are tough, ambitious, and also determined to reach the World Cup,” Ekong said on Saturday afternoon.
“However, we have a strong group — 24 players — and only about four of us have been to the World Cup before. That adrenaline and hunger to experience the World Cup is a huge motivation for us to conquer on Sunday.”
Ekong, along with Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, and Chidozie Awaziem, are the only players in the current squad who featured at the Russia 2018 World Cup.
Coach Éric Chelle’s team will have to keep a close eye on several key threats in the Congo squad, including Spain-based Cédric Bakambu, France-based Nathaniel Mbuku, former Russia U21 forward Theo Bongonda, and Egypt’s Fiston Mayele.
The midfield will be marshalled by Premier League player Noah Sadiki and Spain-based Charles Pickel, while attack-minded Aaron Wan-Bissaka leads a solid defence that features captain Chancel Mbemba, who is set for his 101st cap.
Chelle has all 24 players available, including Iwobi, who is on course for his 91st cap, and Moses Simon, who will make his 87th appearance. Ekong says the entire squad is locked in on the mission.
“We would have preferred to get the automatic ticket, but it didn’t work out. Now we have a second chance, and we do not intend to waste it.”
