Manchester United stunned Anfield on Sunday as Harry Maguire’s powerful 84th-minute header sealed a 2-1 victory over Liverpool.
The dramatic finish denied Liverpool a draw despite Cody Gakpo’s late equaliser during a strong second-half push.
United took an early lead just two minutes in when Bryan Mbeumo latched onto a through ball and slotted past Giorgi Mamardashvili, leaving Liverpool to chase the game. The hosts dominated possession but were repeatedly denied by the woodwork, with Gakpo hitting the post multiple times before finally levelling in the 78th minute from a Federico Chiesa cross.
However, United struck back just six minutes later as Bruno Fernandes delivered a perfect cross for Maguire, whose glancing header found the net.
The defeat leaves Liverpool four points behind league leaders Arsenal and extends their poor run under manager Arne Slot, who is still searching for consistency after a major squad overhaul.
“It means everything,” Maguire said after the win. “They’ve had the better of us for years. Our fans have waited a long time for this — coming here and taking three points feels incredible.”
Liverpool, who last lost at Anfield over a year ago, now face mounting pressure to rediscover their form. Despite heavy investment in new signings, their defensive lapses proved costly again, as United climbed to ninth in the table and eased the pressure on manager Amorim.
