Serena Williams leaves the door open for a surprise tennis comeback

by Admin

Serena Williams has once again sparked speculation about a possible return to tennis after refusing to rule out a comeback, saying simply, “I don’t know. I’m just going to see what happens.”

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, now 44 and a mother of two, has not played competitively since her third-round exit at the 2022 US Open. However, rumours gained momentum in December when she re-entered the tennis anti-doping testing pool — a move she later downplayed while denying any confirmed plans to return.

Appearing on the television show *Today* on Wednesday, Williams maintained her cautious stance. While she said she is currently enjoying life, she avoided giving a clear answer when pressed on whether that meant a comeback was possible.

“That’s not a yes or a no,” she said. “I don’t know — I’m just going to see what happens.”

Asked about rejoining the anti-doping programme, Williams was evasive, saying she wasn’t even sure she had officially left it and declined to go into details.

The speculation comes as her sister Venus, 45, recently competed at the Australian Open after receiving a wildcard, following appearances in Auckland and Hobart earlier this year.

Former world number one Jim Courier noted during the Australian Open that returning to the anti-doping testing pool is demanding and usually signals serious intent. Athletes must make themselves available for testing and complete six months in the programme before returning to competition.

“No one without plans to play would willingly do that,” Courier said, adding that he believes Williams will compete again in some form — whether in singles, doubles, or mixed doubles.

The Williams sisters are one of the most successful doubles pairings in history, with 14 Grand Slam titles and three Olympic gold medals together.
