During the visit, the Pope congratulated Inter Milan on their successful season and praised their achievement as “Champions of Italy.” However, he also encouraged the players not to focus only on sporting success but to reflect on their journey and use their influence positively, especially among young fans.
The Pope highlighted that many supporters see footballers as heroes and role models, stressing that this responsibility goes beyond performance on the pitch. He urged the players to embody values such as discipline, humility, and integrity, which can inspire younger generations.
He also reminded the team of a historic 1991 meeting between Inter Milan and Saint John Paul II, who previously encouraged the club to uphold authenticity and strong moral character in their conduct both on and off the field.
Inter Milan’s leadership, including president Giuseppe Marotta, vice president Javier Zanetti, owners Oaktree, coaching staff, and players, attended the audience and received the Pope’s blessing.
As a symbolic gesture, Marotta presented the Pope with a customised Inter Milan jersey bearing the number 10 and the name “LEONE XIV,” marking the occasion.
