Nigerians Repatriated from South Africa Arrive Thursday
The first batch of Nigerians repatriated from South Africa is expected to arrive at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos on Thursday, June 11, following growing concerns over xenophobic attacks in the country.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Air Peace evacuation flight will depart Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday night and land in Lagos by 5:00 a.m. on Thursday.
The Nigerian government has fully funded the repatriation exercise and put arrangements in place to receive and support the returnees. Upon arrival, the evacuees will undergo documentation and profiling before receiving assistance and being reunited with their families.
The evacuation flight was initially scheduled for Monday but was postponed due to logistical challenges.
More than 1,000 Nigerians living in South Africa have reportedly indicated interest in returning home as tensions over anti-migrant violence continue to raise concerns.
