Xenophobia: FG to Repatriate Over 1,000 Nigerians from South Africa – Minister

by Admin

Nigeria’s repatriation from South Africa programme is underway as the Federal Government prepares to assist more than 1,000 citizens who wish to return home amid growing concerns over xenophobic tensions and anti-immigrant protests in South Africa.

The voluntary initiative follows reports of increasing hostility toward foreign nationals in Africa’s most industrialised economy. Nigerian authorities say the exercise is intended to support citizens who feel unsafe or wish to leave as fears of further unrest continue to grow.

According to Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, screening for the repatriation exercise began on Thursday. While officials expect over 1,000 Nigerians to participate, the final number has yet to be confirmed.

Nigeria’s High Commission in Pretoria disclosed that discussions with South African authorities have secured special waivers for Nigerians with immigration-related offences. The arrangement will allow eligible citizens to return home through organised repatriation flights without facing detention.

South Africa has long attracted migrant workers from across Africa because of its relatively advanced economy and employment opportunities. However, persistent unemployment challenges and recurring xenophobic tensions have contributed to periodic outbreaks of violence against foreign nationals.

In recent weeks, anti-immigrant demonstrations have intensified, with some groups issuing demands for the removal of undocumented migrants by the end of June. The developments have raised concerns among several African governments about the safety and welfare of their citizens living in South Africa.

Although South African authorities have increased efforts to tackle illegal immigration, the government has repeatedly urged citizens not to take the law into their own hands. Officials maintain that immigration matters should be handled through legal and institutional channels.
