The Nigerian senior female basketball team, D’Tigress, beat their Canadian opponents 79-70 on Sunday to reach their first-ever quarterfinals of the Olympic Games.
The Nigerian team made history in their last Group B match of the Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in France.
The game was tied, with both teams scoring 18 points each by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, D’Tigress trailed their Canadian opponents 41-37.
Determined to make history and advance to the quarterfinals, D’Tigress intensified their attack, leading 55-46 before securing a historic 79-70 win by the end of the game.
Among the standout players for Nigeria was point guard and three-time Afrobasket champion Ezinne Kalu, who was instrumental throughout the game, scoring 21 points.
The win was a proud moment for head coach Rene Wakama, who had urged the African champions to return to their winning ways before their game against Canada.
