A Goal and a Trophy: Kylian Mbappé’s Dream Debut for Real Madrid
Kylian Mbappé, wearing the iconic white jersey of Real Madrid for the first time in a competitive match, made an unforgettable debut by scoring a goal and helping his team to a 2-0 victory over Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.
The captain of the French national team played 82 minutes at the National Stadium in Warsaw. In the 68th minute, Mbappé received a pass from Jude Bellingham, and with a precise shot into the top corner of the net, he scored the second goal for his team.
“He’s just one of those players, isn’t he?” said Jude Bellingham about Mbappé. “He is brilliant — incredibly sharp, full of technical quality, and a great teammate as well.”
After his signature celebration with arms crossed over his chest, Mbappé was embraced by Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, the other members of Real Madrid’s dynamic attacking trio. This group promises to be a major force in European soccer in the upcoming season.
Earlier in the match, Federico Valverde had opened the scoring for Madrid by tapping in a cross from Vinicius in the 59th minute. This victory secured Madrid’s record sixth Super Cup title, adding to their already impressive collection of European honors.
Real Madrid has long been a club associated with excellence and legendary players. With Mbappé now in their ranks, the club has added another world-class talent to its storied history. It was a powerful start for Mbappé, who as a child dreamed of playing for the world’s top soccer club.
Starting the match as Madrid’s central striker, Mbappé initially found limited success, but a strategic shift to a wide position in the second half proved fruitful.
“We have a new-look team, and everything seemed to click tonight,” Bellingham commented. “Sometimes it takes time to adjust, but in the second half, we were brilliant.”
Vinicius and Bellingham were standout performers in the match, showcasing the quality that helped Madrid secure the Champions League and La Liga titles last season. Despite a challenging first half where both teams hit the crossbar, Carlo Ancelotti’s side eventually took control.
At one point, Madrid defender Éder Militão accidentally deflected a cross onto his own bar, and just before halftime, Rodrygo struck the bar with a powerful shot.
“At one point, the game was within our reach,” said Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
Atalanta came close to taking the lead early in the second half when Mario Pašalić’s header was expertly saved by Madrid’s goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois. However, Madrid dominated the rest of the game, with Vinicius taking on a more central role.
Carlo Ancelotti faces the exciting challenge of finding the perfect lineup, especially with the addition of Brazil’s rising star, Endrick, who didn’t make it off the bench in this match.
Luka Modrić, the 38-year-old Croatian legend, was one of Madrid’s second-half substitutes. He lifted the trophy against a backdrop of gold confetti, while Mbappé danced and led the celebrations before finally getting his hands on the coveted silverware.
