Queen Margrethe of Denmark, 84, has been hospitalised after a fall at Fredensborg Castle. Though in stable condition, she will remain under observation, according to a statement from the palace.
The Queen, a third cousin of Queen Elizabeth, was scheduled to attend an event at Aarhus University on Friday but has now withdrawn. She was last seen on Monday at the Rungstedlund Prize 2024 ceremony at the Karen Blixen Museum.
Despite announcing her abdication in her New Year’s Eve speech last year, Queen Margrethe continues to perform royal duties alongside her son, Frederik. Fredensborg Castle, located on the island of Zealand, is the royal family’s summer residence.
In her abdication, Queen Margrethe cited health concerns, particularly a back surgery she underwent in February 2023. Reflecting on the surgery, she said, “It went well, thanks to the skilled healthcare staff. It made me think about whether it was time to pass on the responsibility.”
Though no longer ruling, Queen Margrethe still holds the title of Her Majesty and can step in as regent when King Frederik, Queen Mary, or Crown Prince Christian are unavailable.
