FIFA has handed Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson a two-game suspension following the straight red card he received during the Club World Cup defeat to Flamengo on Friday, June 20.
The 24-year-old was initially given an automatic one-match ban, ruling him out of Chelsea’s final group-stage fixture against Esperance Sportive de Tunis, which the Blues went on to win 3-0.
Jackson was dismissed for a reckless studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas—his second red card in just four appearances across all competitions.
However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee reviewed the incident and classified it as serious foul play, resulting in an extended suspension for Nicolas Jackson.
“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed the following sanction on Chelsea player Nicolas Jackson, who was sent off with a direct red card during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 match between his team and CR Flamengo,” FIFA said in a statement quoted by ESPN on Tuesday.
“A two-match suspension for a breach under Article 14, paragraph 1(e) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This decision is final and binding, and cannot be appealed.”
Jackson took to social media after the game to apologise for his actions. He will now miss Chelsea’s round of 16 clash against Benfica.
While the standard punishment for a red card at the tournament in the U.S. is a one-game suspension, FIFA has the authority to extend it in cases of more serious misconduct.
