Bruno Fernandes has expressed his willingness to leave Manchester United if the club needs to sell him in order to rebuild following their disappointing Europa League final loss to Tottenham. United were defeated 1-0 in Bilbao on Wednesday by a Brennan Johnson goal, marking another blow to an already difficult season.
Manager Ruben Amorim had already stated that he would step down without seeking compensation if the club no longer wanted him, and Fernandes, 30, has now followed suit. He understands United’s need for a squad overhaul despite the financial challenges the club faces.
“I’ve always been honest. I’ve said I’ll stay until the club tells me it’s time to go,” Fernandes said. “I want to do more and help bring the club back to its glory days. If the club feels it’s time to part ways, then that’s football, sometimes that’s how it goes.”
The defeat in the final was a painful experience for Fernandes, who shared his frustration: “We wanted to win more than anything in this final. It’s a sad day because we had done so well in the competition until now. But today was the day that mattered the most, and it didn’t go our way.”
Despite the club’s poor performance under Amorim, who took over in November, Fernandes still believes the manager is the right person to lead the team through this challenging period. “We all agree that he’s the right man. We see more than just the results and know he can bring back the positivity needed to fight for big trophies again,” Fernandes added.
