James Milner made Premier League history after setting a new record of 654 appearances when the 40-year-old started for Brighton & Hove Albion in Saturday’s clash against Brentford.
Milner moves past former Aston Villa and Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry to become the league’s all-time appearance leader.
His remarkable journey began at Leeds United, where he broke into the first team and became the Premier League’s youngest-ever goalscorer at the time, aged just 16. Over the years, he also represented Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool.
During his time at City and Liverpool, Milner lifted three Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League.
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler — eight years younger than Milner — praised the veteran’s professionalism and drive.
“He’s a role model on and off the pitch,” Hurzeler said. “There’s no surprise he’s where he is because of his discipline and daily effort. He’s never satisfied — he just keeps going.”
Milner made his Premier League debut back in 2002 with Leeds, marking the start of a career that has now rewritten the record books.
