Former Manchester City and England player Joey Barton is no stranger to controversy, and his latest remarks have set the internet ablaze.
Speaking on the Common Sense Podcast, the former England international claimed that Africa has never produced a defender better than Jamie Carragher.
“Can anybody out there, as much as all the Afrikanos have had a pop at Carragher for saying what he said,” Barton stated.
“There’s no better defender to come from Africa than Jamie Carragher. Africa has never produced a better defender than Jamie Carragher.”
Barton made these comments in defence of Carragher, who faced backlash after suggesting that the Africa Cup of Nations was not a major tournament. Carragher has since clarified his statement, admitting that his wording was clumsy.
