A fire incident in Ibadan, Nigeria, has claimed the lives of a husband, his wife, and their grandson in the Ori-Eru, Idikan area of Oyo State.
The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Friday, affecting a storey building, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Friday in Ibadan.
Akinyinka stated that the agency received a distress call at 3:46 am from one Hassan and immediately dispatched personnel to the scene.
“On arrival, we found the upper floor of a six-room residential storey building engulfed in flames. We swiftly swung into action, and the fire was completely extinguished,” he said.
He confirmed that three individuals — a husband, his wife, and their grandson — tragically lost their lives in the fire, while five others were rescued alive from the building.
The ground floor and nearby properties were spared from the blaze.
Akinyinka revealed that the fire started when the victims, attempting to keep warm during the cold weather, used a naked flame, which caused the disaster while they were asleep.
He added that a team of policemen, led by CSP Olaniyan Jibola from the Mapo Division, and operatives of Amotekun, led by Gbenga Akinyemi from the North West Division, were present at the scene to ensure law and order.
