Former US President Donald Trump has recently divulged his intentions in the event of losing the 2024 presidential election, slated for November. Trump addressed concerns surrounding election integrity during an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
During the interview, Trump asserted, “If everything’s honest, I’ll gladly accept the results. I don’t change on that. If it’s not, you have to fight for the right of the country.” These remarks followed a rally in Waukesha, Wisconsin, a crucial state in the upcoming presidential election and the designated location for the 2024 Republican National Convention, where Trump is anticipated to be formally nominated as the party’s candidate against Democrat Joe Biden.
In the Wednesday interview, Trump reiterated his claim that he had won Wisconsin in the 2020 election, despite official results stating otherwise. “If you go back and look at all of the things that had been found out, it showed that I won the election in Wisconsin,” Trump stated. He further asserted victory in other unspecified locations. However, his claims were debunked after a recount and Republican-backed reviews found no evidence of voter fraud, as Trump had alleged.
In the 2020 election, President Biden secured Wisconsin by a margin of just over 20,000 votes, garnering 1,630,866 votes compared to Trump’s 1,610,184. Trump had previously won the state in 2016.
Trump’s recent interview and assertions come amid a barrage of legal challenges. He faces numerous criminal cases, including charges of obstruction in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into election interference. Despite this, the Supreme Court appears to be questioning the extent to which federal prosecutors have pursued obstruction charges against hundreds of participants in the January 6 riot.
