Lookman Now Matching Osimhen’s Impact, Says Peseiro

by Admin

Former Super Eagles head coach **José Peseiro** believes **Ademola Lookman** has developed to the point where his influence now rivals that of **Victor Osimhen** for Nigeria, and says the forward has what it takes to become a central figure at **Atlético Madrid**.

While Osimhen has long been viewed as the team’s leading star, Peseiro noted that Lookman’s contributions — particularly at the Africa Cup of Nations — have been just as decisive. He pointed out that the winger has even outscored Osimhen at certain stages, stressing that both players are now key pillars of the national side.

Peseiro also referenced Lookman’s memorable hat-trick in the Europa League final for **Atalanta BC** as proof of his growing impact at club level, describing it as further evidence of his ability to deliver on the biggest stage.

Across consecutive AFCON tournaments, Lookman has directly contributed to 11 goals — six goals and five assists in 13 appearances — helping Nigeria secure silver and bronze medals. According to Peseiro, the 28-year-old has consistently stepped up when it matters most.

The former coach dismissed claims that Lookman is difficult to manage, instead portraying him as humble and easy to handle when trusted and allowed creative freedom. He emphasised that giving the forward space to express himself brings out his best qualities.

Peseiro said Lookman’s early performances in Spain already highlight his composure and talent. Although he urged patience as the player adapts, he insisted the signs are clear that Lookman does not shy away from pressure and possesses the confidence to thrive at the highest level.

Describing the transfer as a defining chapter in the forward’s career, Peseiro added that the move fulfils Lookman’s long-standing ambition to compete among Europe’s elite while proving doubters wrong after difficult spells in England and Germany.

He revealed that conversations back in 2022 helped spark the player’s resurgence. At that time, Lookman was seeking stability after mixed experiences at **Everton FC**, **RB Leipzig**, **Fulham FC**, and **Leicester City FC**.

Peseiro disclosed that Lookman had previously expressed disappointment over losing his place in England’s youth setup despite winning the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2017. The setback, he said, was difficult for the player but ultimately became part of his motivation.

Now entering his prime years, Lookman has evolved into a more complete footballer. Peseiro highlighted his improved defensive work, physical strength, and tactical maturity, crediting the demands of Italian football for accelerating his growth.

According to the Portuguese coach, Lookman is most effective operating centrally behind a striker, where he can exploit spaces, shoot, dribble, or create chances. While dangerous on the wing, Peseiro believes the forward is at his most decisive when influencing the game from inside channels.
