Malawi’s Temwa Chawinga has shattered Sam Kerr’s record for the most goals in a single National Women’s Soccer League season by scoring 19 goals.
In a post shared from Fabrizio Romano’s X account on Sunday, it was noted that Chawinga, a forward for the Kansas City Current in the NWSL and the Malawi national team, achieved this milestone in her debut season in the league.
The 26-year-old striker previously played for Swedish club Kvarnsvedens IK and Chinese club Wuhan Jianghan University.
Chawinga has netted her 19 goals across 24 matches, scoring an average of every 109 minutes. She has taken 103 shots, achieving a shot conversion rate of 18.63%. Although Chawinga holds the single-season record, Kerr still retains the overall NWSL record for goals, having scored 77, which is 13 more than the next highest, Lynn Williams, with 64.
Chawinga’s record-breaking goal contributed to a 1-0 victory for the Current against Bay FC, propelling Kansas City to third place in the NWSL standings.
