Despite strong links to Barcelona, Nico Williams has committed his future to Athletic Bilbao by signing a new contract until 2035.
The 22-year-old Spain international reportedly had personal terms agreed with Barça, but the Catalan club’s attempt to pay his transfer fee in instalments was rejected by Bilbao.
Speaking after the announcement, Williams said: “When decisions have to be made, for me, what weighs most is the heart. I’m where I want to be, with my people—this is my home. Aupa Athletic!”
Since joining the first team in 2021, Williams has made 167 appearances, scored 31 goals, and played a vital role in helping Athletic lift the Copa del Rey in 2024—their first major trophy in 40 years. He’s expected to feature in next season’s Champions League campaign.
His new deal also includes a release clause increase of over 50%, up from €58 million (£50m).
On the international stage, Williams has become an essential figure under Luis de la Fuente, earning 28 caps and scoring six goals—one of which came in Spain’s Euro 2024 final victory over England.
