Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Thursday to review preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico will co-host alongside the United States and Canada.
On social media, Sheinbaum thanked Infantino for his visit, sharing photos with him and the World Cup trophy. She confirmed that the tournament’s opening ceremony will take place at Mexico City’s iconic Azteca Stadium on June 11, 2026.
The president also highlighted that Mexico will host 13 matches in total, spread across Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.
Infantino’s stop in Mexico came shortly after his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently announced that the World Cup draw will be held on December 5 at the Kennedy Center in Washington. Infantino, known for his close relationship with Trump, even brought along the World Cup trophy during that visit, allowing Trump to hold it.
The 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, arrives at a politically charged moment, with tensions in North America heightened by Trump’s trade and tariff policies.
