Virgil van Dijk has signed a new contract with Liverpool FC, extending his stay at Anfield beyond the 2024-25 season.
The 33-year-old defender, whose previous deal was due to expire at the end of the current campaign, follows Mohamed Salah in committing his future to the club with a two-year extension.
“I’m very happy, very proud,” Van Dijk told Liverpoolfc.com. “There are so many emotions going through my head right now. It’s a proud feeling, a feeling of joy. To continue this journey for another two years at this club is just amazing.”
He continued: “It was always going to be Liverpool. That was always in my mind. There was never any doubt—this is the place for me and my family. Someone even called me an adopted Scouser the other day—I’m really proud of that.”
Since joining Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for a then-world-record fee for a defender of £75 million, Van Dijk has been central to the club’s success, helping the Reds to a Premier League title, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.
Now, as Liverpool captain, Van Dijk is aiming to lead the team to another Premier League title, with Arne Slot’s side sitting 13 points clear at the top with just six games remaining.
