CAF President Patrice Motsepe has confirmed he will seek re-election in March 2025, following widespread support from several CAF Member Association Presidents and Zonal Union Presidents.
Motsepe, the South African billionaire first elected on March 12, 2021, in Rabat, Morocco, announced his re-election bid on Friday, ending months of speculation regarding his future. His tenure has reportedly brought notable financial improvements to CAF’s operations, as highlighted during the 46th CAF Ordinary Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Tuesday.
However, Motsepe may face competition from Hany Abo Rida, a FIFA Council member backed by the Egyptian Football Association. “Hany Abo Rida is a strong candidate for the CAF presidency,” said EFA member Ehab El-Komy on Sada El-Baled TV. “He brings great value to football, and anyone seeking something from Infantino often turns to Abo Rida. He’s well-suited to lead the African Union in the coming years.”
Motsepe, who replaced the banned former president Ahmad Ahmad, took office unopposed in 2021 after FIFA President Gianni Infantino reportedly influenced other candidates to withdraw, including Augustin Senghor of Senegal, Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania, and Jacques Anouma of Ivory Coast.
