Super Falcons goalkeeper Yewande Balogun has retired from professional football.
Balogun, who was part of the Super Falcons squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, made one appearance for the nine-time African champions.
On Tuesday, Balogun announced her retirement via an Instagram post, reflecting on her journey.
“Maybe it’s fitting that I never officially announced ‘retirement’ after university and after having knee cartilage replacement surgery. While it left me with no actual closure from my playing career, it also left open a door to go back to playing, and it was so obvious to walk through it when the opportunity presented itself a decade later,” she shared on Instagram.

“The journey has been full of surprises, with its share of beautiful highs and dark lows. Sure, my path could have unfolded differently, but that would have changed the story. Now, my story is one of belief—belief in God, in myself. It’s a story of determination against overwhelming odds, of taking risks, saying yes, and stepping far beyond the safety net into the unknown. It’s a story driven by the fear of regret, a fear so strong that failure was never an option.
“In this story, a dream I thought was long lost—my lifelong dream of playing professional football—was reignited. I was blessed to represent Nigeria on the international stage. I lived and played in various countries, and through it all, I never stopped learning about the game, the world, or myself.
“They say it’s not about the destination, but the journey. And I can tell you that many of the best moments of my story didn’t happen on the pitch. They are the memories from the places I’ve seen and the people I’ve met along the way. Many walked with me, many supported me, and a few stood as my occasional antagonists. Each of them gave me reasons to keep the faith and find joy in it all, no matter the challenges or plot twists. I’m especially thankful to those who helped make it all possible.
“My body is telling me it’s time to close this chapter and hang up my boots (for real this time), but I thank God for every step of this journey. I’ll forever be grateful to the beautiful game and all that it has given me. Here’s to continuing to find ways to give back. Thank you all for your love and support along the way.”
