WNBA finds no evidence of racist fan behaviour during Angel Reese vs. Caitlin Clark matchup

by Admin

The WNBA has completed its investigation into claims that Chicago Sky star Angel Reese and her teammates were subjected to racist taunts during a May 17 game against the Indiana Fever—and says it found no evidence to support the allegations.

The league launched the probe after social media users alleged that racially charged heckling occurred at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. But after speaking with fans, team and arena staff, and reviewing game footage and audio, the WNBA said it could not verify any of the claims.

“Based on information gathered to date,” the league said in a statement on Tuesday, May 27, “including from relevant fans, team and arena staff, as well as audio and video review of the game, we have not substantiated it.”

Angel Reese had previously addressed the seriousness of the allegations, telling reporters during a May 20 media session that such behaviour “has no place in the game.” She also thanked the WNBA and her team for taking the matter seriously and committing to a full investigation.

Following the WNBA’s findings, the Indiana Fever expressed support for the outcome, releasing a statement that read: “We appreciate the swift and thorough process undertaken by the WNBA to investigate these allegations, which were not substantiated.”

“At Gainbridge Fieldhouse, we’re dedicated to creating a first-class basketball experience for both players and fans—where hate speech is never tolerated. Indiana is home to the world’s greatest fans, and we’re excited for what’s ahead this season with Fever basketball.”

The incident drew significant media attention due to the marquee nature of the game, which featured 2024 No. 1 draft pick Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese—two high-profile rivals from their college days.
