FIFA’s decision to appoint South African referees for Nigeria’s World Cup playoff semi-final against Gabon has sparked outrage among Nigerian fans, who are questioning the neutrality of the move.
The Super Eagles will face Gabon on November 13 in Morocco, with the winner advancing to the final round to meet either Congo DR or Cameroon for Africa’s sole spot in the intercontinental playoff.
South Africa’s Tom Abongile has been named as the centre referee for the high-stakes clash, assisted by compatriot Zakhele Siwela, while Akhona Makalima will oversee VAR duties. Hughes Ndjovi from Benin Republic will serve as the referee assessor.
The appointments have stirred anger on Nigerian social media, given that Nigeria, South Africa, and Benin Republic were all part of Group C in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Nigeria finished as one of the four best runners-up after a 4–0 win over Benin, while South Africa topped the group to earn an automatic ticket following FIFA’s ruling against Lesotho for fielding an ineligible player.
Adding to the tension, South Africa’s sports minister, Gayton McKenzie, had earlier blamed Nigeria for the sanction and openly stated he did not want the Super Eagles to qualify for the World Cup.
In light of these events, many Nigerians have voiced concerns over potential bias, arguing that FIFA’s choice of officials could compromise fairness in such a crucial encounter.
