Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim delivered a blunt verdict on his team’s display after their defeat to Everton, admitting they fully deserved to lose the Premier League clash.
According to BBC Sports on Tuesday, Amorim said United failed to match Everton’s intensity and quality, even though they played with a numerical advantage for more than 70 minutes.
Asked to summarise the performance, Amorim said, “They were the better team. We deserved to lose.
“Twenty minutes into the game, the opponent gets a red card. We need to win this game no matter what.”
Everton secured a 1–0 victory at Old Trafford in a match that saw Idrissa Gueye sent off for slapping teammate Michael Keane.
“Old Trafford was saying, ‘We’re all here to take a big step forward,’ but I felt we weren’t ready,” Amorim added.
“These past five weeks, when everyone has been praising our evolution, I’ve said the same thing: we’re nowhere near where we’re supposed to be at this club.”
The club spent £250m in the summer attempting to rejuvenate a squad that had slumped to 15th last season.
Manchester United now sit 10th in the table, part of a group including Tottenham, Everton, and Liverpool—just three points off the top four.
