Arsenal have made Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman their primary transfer target over Athletic Club’s Nico Williams as they aim to strengthen their attacking options this summer.
The Nigeria international, who has enjoyed a standout season with 18 goals and seven assists in 37 appearances, is expected to leave Bergamo after a successful three-year stint with Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.
According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal are one of five Premier League clubs planning to hold talks with the 27-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window, with Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Newcastle United also showing interest.
Lookman’s impressive transformation since his time in the Premier League has drawn attention from top European clubs. During his spells with Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City, he scored just 11 goals in 96 appearances, but his record at Atalanta has been far more impressive, with 50 goals in 115 matches across all competitions.
His memorable hat-trick in last season’s Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen showcased his quality on the big stage, and he has continued his excellent form this season.
Barcelona and Juventus have reportedly already contacted Lookman’s representatives about his availability. However, both clubs may struggle to meet Atalanta’s asking price, believed to be between €60-65 million. Barcelona’s financial difficulties could hinder them from competing with Premier League sides, possibly opening the door for a return to England for Lookman.
If Arsenal are able to secure Lookman’s signature, it could end their long-standing pursuit of Athletic Club’s Nico Williams. The Spain international has been Arsenal’s primary left-wing target for the past year, with reports suggesting that Mikel Arteta’s side were the most likely to finalise an agreement with the 22-year-old.
However, since both Lookman and Williams prefer playing on the left wing, Arsenal are expected to sign only one, especially with Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard already at the club.
Manchester United, struggling offensively this season with just 39 goals in 34 Premier League matches, are reportedly considering a bold swap deal involving Danish striker Rasmus Højlund to secure Lookman’s services.
