Nuno Espírito Santo grew up in São Tomé and Príncipe, a small island nation in Central Africa, describing his childhood as “beautiful,” with family nearby and the sea close at hand. He left the island at the age of eight to pursue a professional football career, playing for clubs such as Porto, Deportivo de La Coruña, and Dynamo Moscow. By 2012, he had begun his managerial career, starting with Rio Ave and later leading Valencia, Porto, Wolves, Tottenham, and Nottingham Forest, before joining West Ham.
At West Ham, Santo is currently the only Black manager in the Premier League. He believes that more Black coaches will soon take top managerial roles, emphasising that recruitment is determined by talent, hard work, and opportunity rather than discrimination. While nearly half of Premier League players are Black, representation in managerial and board positions remains limited, highlighting ongoing diversity challenges within English football. Policies like the Rooney Rule, which requires clubs to interview ethnic minority candidates for senior roles, are steps toward improvement.
Santo has also worked with African coaches, praising their talent, individuality, and unique approach to the game. After securing his first win with West Ham against Newcastle, his immediate goal is to ensure the team avoids relegation. Looking further ahead, he hopes to return to São Tomé and Príncipe to share his experience and help develop football in his home country. Before joining West Ham, Santo led Nottingham Forest to European qualification with a seventh-place Premier League finish and an FA Cup semi-final.
