China has called on the international community to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty following a recent US threat of military action.
Beijing reaffirmed its support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, praising Nigeria for pursuing a development path suited to its national realities.
According to a statement on the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks during a press briefing on Tuesday in Beijing.
“As Nigeria’s strategic partner, China opposes any attempt by foreign powers to use religion or human rights as an excuse to interfere in another country’s internal affairs or to impose sanctions and military threats,” Mao said.
The warning comes after the United States threatened possible military intervention over alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, with President Donald Trump reportedly saying he would take action if the alleged attacks are not stopped.
