‘Lookman better than Leao’

Former Lazio midfielder Dario Marcolin has suggested that Super Eagles attacker Ademola Lookman would be a better signing for Italian Serie A champions Napoli than AC Milan winger Rafael Leao.

Speaking to Radio Marte during Marte Sport Live, Marcolin, who previously coached Catania and is now a pundit for DAZN, shared his thoughts on Napoli’s potential transfer activity ahead of their title defence in the 2025/2026 season. He stated his preference for Atalanta’s Lookman over Leao, as both wingers have been linked with a move to the club.

“Between Leão and Lookman, along with De Bruyne and Conte’s continued presence, I think both are realistic targets for Napoli. But if I had to choose between the two wingers, I’d go for Lookman. Leão is undoubtedly talented, and under Conte, he could achieve more consistency. However, Lookman offers greater versatility. He can play in multiple roles, he’s decisive, he provides that change of pace, excels in one-on-ones, has speed, and contributes more goals,” Marcolin explained.

Lookman, 27, enjoyed another impressive campaign for Atalanta in the 2024/2025 season. The former Everton and RB Leipzig winger scored 15 goals and provided five assists in 31 Serie A appearances, helping Atalanta finish third. In all competitions, Lookman netted 20 goals, including five in the UEFA Champions League, and added seven assists in 40 appearances. His standout performances have attracted interest from top European clubs, with speculation surrounding his potential move following the departure of head coach Gian Piero Gasperini to AS Roma.

Marcolin also commented on the potential move of Kevin De Bruyne to Napoli, praising the Belgian’s versatility. “De Bruyne can play every midfield role and also act as a link just behind Lukaku. Right now, I see him operating closer to the Belgian striker, whom he knows well and plays alongside for the national team. In that role, he’d support the midfield and connect play with the forwards,” Marcolin said.
