Nigerian music superstar, David Adeleke, aka Davido, has shared that many people did not believe in his potential when he was starting his career.
In a recent interview with Streetz94.5, a hip-hop radio station in Atlanta, Davido spoke about how his family supported him from the very beginning.
He explained, “Some people didn’t believe. When I first started, it was literally just my family and my manager. A lot of friends I have now are people I met along the way. Some friends from school believed, but a lot of people didn’t.”
Davido also credited his father’s religious values for helping him navigate life’s challenges. “My dad is very successful, but he’s an elder in the church. I grew up in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. I attended a Christian college,” he said.
Reflecting on moments of hardship, Davido remembered questioning life’s fairness and having a conversation with his father. “I was angry when some things happened in my life. I asked, ‘Why do bad things happen to good people?’ My dad told me, ‘You can’t question God, ever!’ I didn’t understand at the time, but as time passed, it made sense.”
Davido continued, “A year later, we had twins, the biggest album of my career came, and my first Grammy nominations came. It started to make sense that He’s listening. Anybody that has heard my story and is going through anything, just know that God has your back.”
He also emphasized the importance of having supportive people around, saying, “It’s very easy to give up, but having good people around is the best. Don’t play with family; the people that will always be there are family.”
Davido, who tragically lost his son Ifeanyi in October 2022, welcomed a set of twins—a boy and a girl—with his wife, Chioma, in October 2023.
