Spanish midfield legend Sergio Busquets has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the MLS season.
The news was first shared by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Friday, who reported that the Inter Miami midfielder will hang up his boots this October.
Romano wrote: “Sergio Busquets RETIRES from professional football at the end of the MLS season! Decision made by the Spanish midfielder… who’s leaving Inter Miami and professional football in October. Legend and icon of the game.”
Busquets, 36, is celebrated for his intelligence, calmness, and ability to dictate play from midfield.
He later confirmed the news in an Instagram post, sharing a tribute video with the caption: “A heartfelt thank you to everyone, and to football, for everything. You will always be a part of this beautiful story.”
Over his career, Busquets achieved huge success with Barcelona, winning several La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles. He was also a vital part of Spain’s golden generation, helping the national team secure the 2010 World Cup as well as the 2008 and 2012 European Championships.
