Possible Playoff: How Napoli and Inter Could Win or Lose the 2024/25 Serie A Title

by Admin

The 2024/25 Serie A season concludes today, Friday, May 23, with a dramatic finish as Napoli and Inter Milan go head-to-head in a tight race for the Scudetto.

Napoli currently tops the table with 79 points, holding a narrow one-point lead over Inter, who sit on 78.

To ensure a fair and suspenseful end to the campaign, both clubs will play their final matches simultaneously at 20:45 CEST (19:45 WAT).

Scudetto Scenarios: How It Could All End

  • If Napoli wins: They are crowned champions — securing their fourth Serie A title in club history.
  • If Napoli draws and Inter wins: Inter leapfrogs Napoli by a single point to claim the title.
  • If Napoli loses and Inter wins: Inter wins the league by two points.
  • If Napoli loses and Inter draws: Both teams finish level on points — triggering a historic title playoff.
  • If both teams draw or lose: Napoli retains the top spot with a one-point cushion.

A Rare Title Playoff?

The rule for a championship playoff was reinstated in 2022, and we could now see it in action for the first time. If Napoli loses and Inter draws, both sides will finish tied on points — leading to a playoff scheduled for Monday, May 26, at San Siro.

Napoli’s Final Test

Napoli will face Cagliari at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. Despite recent setbacks — two straight draws — optimism is high in Naples. The city is awash in light blue, with fans ready for a potential title celebration.

However, the team will be without key players: Stanislav Lobotka, Juan Jesus, and Alessandro Buongiorno are all out injured. To add to the challenge, manager Antonio Conte is suspended and will miss the match from the sidelines.

“We must approach the match against Cagliari with seriousness and determination to finish what has been a demanding and potentially historic season,” Conte urged.

Inter’s Final Hurdle

Inter heads to Como, a side in excellent form, having won six of their last seven games. Inter’s boss, Simone Inzaghi, is also suspended and will have to make late calls on the fitness of star striker Lautaro Martinez and midfielder Davide Frattesi — especially with the UEFA Champions League final against PSG just days away on May 31.

Inter’s record against Como is strong: 18 wins in 27 Serie A meetings, including the last eight encounters. In the reverse fixture this season, Inter won 2–0 at San Siro with goals from Carlos Augusto and Marcus Thuram.
