Tiwa Savage reveals she once struggled with being African

by Admin

Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has dismissed claims that Afrobeats is experiencing its lowest point in two decades.

Her response comes after several industry figures, including music executive Paul Okoye (Paulo) and DJ Big N, suggested that the genre is in decline during recent interviews and online discussions.

Speaking at the Unstoppable Africans event, Savage confidently declared that Afrobeats remains powerful and globally influential. She argued that rather than fading, the genre continues to rise—dominating charts, tours, and global stages.

Savage also reflected on Afrobeats’ cultural impact, revealing that while she once felt unhappy about being African while growing up in London, the global success of the genre has changed that.

“Afrobeats is the fastest-growing genre in the world. We built it from nothing—no support, no structure, no real belief from even our own people at first,” she said.

“I remember growing up in London and not being happy being African. But now, I’m so proud because of how far Afrobeats has come. People said it would fade after 15 minutes of fame, but look at us now—we’re filling stadiums and topping charts.”

She added, “Apparently, one in every four black persons is Nigerian or African. So, we’re not going anywhere. They might try to quiet us down, but the music isn’t stopping. We are Africans—and we are unstoppable.”
