Lookman eyes greater success after CAF award win.

by Admin

Newly crowned African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, made a triumphant return to Atalanta’s starting lineup, scoring a decisive goal in their 3-2 victory over Empoli on Sunday. The win extended La Dea’s lead at the top of Serie A to two points.

The Nigerian international proudly showcased his CAF award before kick-off at the Gewiss Stadium and delivered a crucial strike just before halftime, putting Atalanta 2-1 ahead after Lorenzo Colombo’s early opener.

“Hungrier than ever. Big win,” Lookman shared on social media after the match, which marked Atalanta’s record-breaking 11th consecutive Serie A victory.

The 27-year-old has been in sensational form this season, tallying nine goals and four assists in 14 league appearances. Across all competitions, his stats rise to 12 goals and five assists.

Lookman’s goal came from a tight angle after Nicolò Zaniolo headed down Charles De Ketelaere’s cross, ensuring a vital lead before Empoli equalised from the penalty spot. De Ketelaere’s late winner ultimately secured all three points for Atalanta.

Manager Gian Piero Gasperini praised his team’s determination after the hard-fought win. “Our energy and team spirit make the difference. Even when it’s not our best day, we have the belief to win until the last minute,” Gasperini said. “It was a deserved victory, showing our character and desire.”

The victory ensures Atalanta will top the Serie A table at Christmas for the first time in their 116-year history, capping off a stellar 2023/24 campaign where they won their first European trophy, thanks to Lookman’s historic hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin.

“Being top at Christmas is extraordinary. We hope 2025 will be just as special, but maintaining this mentality is key,” Gasperini added.

Lookman’s exceptional year has seen his market value soar from €30m to €55m, making him Nigeria’s second most valuable player after Victor Osimhen. His achievements include three goals and two assists in Nigeria’s run to the Africa Cup of Nations final and a 14th-place finish in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings.

His CAF Award win makes him the seventh Nigerian to claim the honour, joining legends like Rashidi Yekini, Nwankwo Kanu, and Victor Osimhen.

Despite growing interest from European giants, including a rejected approach from Liverpool, Atalanta remains determined to keep their star forward. “Our plan is not to make changes in January,” stated Atalanta President Antonio Percassi.

Lookman’s focus remains on sustaining Atalanta’s remarkable form as they chase their first-ever Serie A title, following a historic season that included Champions League qualification and Europa League glory.
