There was palpable tension for motorists along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway following an explosion at the Otedola Bridge axis of the expressway on Tuesday.
Multiple videos shared on X showed thick flames rising from the scene, with reports indicating that the explosion occurred around 7 pm.
While the exact cause of the incident remains unknown, some users on X suggested that a petrol tanker was involved.
One user, Tonye Oliver, wrote, “Ongoing tanker fire at Otedola Bridge, this is a major disaster!!”
Another user, Pamilerin Adegoke, urged motorists and commuters to steer clear of the area, saying, “Please avoid the bridge, heavy fire right now.”
Confirming the incident in a brief WhatsApp message, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Nosa Okunbor, stated that emergency responders were already on the scene.
“Some sort of explosion. Awaiting preliminary report. LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team at the location,” Okunbor said.
