Saudi Arabia, home to Islam’s holiest sites, has announced that Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, will begin on Sunday.
“The Supreme Court has decided that tomorrow, Sunday, March 30, 2025, is the first day of Eid al-Fitr,” the Royal Court stated via the official Saudi Press Agency on X. The holiday’s timing follows the sighting of the crescent moon, based on the Muslim lunar calendar.
The United Arab Emirates and Qatar also confirmed that Eid celebrations will start on Sunday, while Oman and Shiite-majority Iran declared Monday as the beginning of the holiday.
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and break their fast with family and friends in the evening. In Saudi Arabia, fasting is widely observed, particularly in Mecca’s Grand Mosque and Medina’s Prophet’s Mosque.
This year, Ramadan observances were overshadowed by Israel’s renewed offensive in Gaza, where thousands have been killed, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.
