EPL: ‘I was afraid’ – Joao Pedro opens up on replacing Palmer as Chelsea’s main man

Brazilian forward Joao Pedro has admitted he initially feared Cole Palmer might think he was at Stamford Bridge to take his place when he joined Chelsea from Brighton this summer.

Speaking about his first encounter with the England international, Pedro explained that he felt the need to reassure Palmer, who is regarded as the Blues’ biggest star under Enzo Maresca.

“Cole is a superstar. When I came to Chelsea I was a little bit scared about how he was going to react, because I was the main guy at Brighton,” Pedro told Standard Sport. “I knew Chelsea would be different. I said: ‘Cole, I’m here to help you’. He knows I can help him, and I know he can help me.”

Pedro, who has already played a key role in Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup triumph, revealed that he and Palmer now share a strong understanding on the pitch and believes they can deliver more trophies together.

The Blues have started the Premier League campaign with two wins and one draw, currently sitting second behind Liverpool.
