The White House on Friday criticised the Norwegian Nobel Committee after it awarded the Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, overlooking US President Donald Trump.
“The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace,” said White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung on X.
“President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.”
Since returning to the White House for his second term in January, Trump has repeatedly insisted he deserves the Nobel Prize for his role in resolving global conflicts — a claim many observers say is widely exaggerated.
On the eve of the announcement, Trump reiterated his belief, citing his mediation in the first phase of a Gaza ceasefire this week as the eighth war he has ended.
Still, he added, “Whatever they do is fine. I know this: I didn’t do it for that — I did it because I’ve saved a lot of lives.”
Experts in Oslo had said ahead of Friday’s announcement that Trump had little chance, noting that his “America First” policies stand in contrast to the ideals of the Peace Prize outlined in Alfred Nobel’s 1895 will.
