Nigerians Thrown into Blackout as National Grid Collapses Again

by Admin

Nigeria has experienced its sixth power grid collapse of 2024, with electricity generation dropping from 2,583.77MW at 2 am on Monday to 64.7MW by 3 am.

The country produces an average of 4,000MW for its 200 million citizens, but this is unstable due to frequent grid collapses caused by gas shortages, vandalism, and liquidity issues.

Data from the Independent System Operator revealed that only Ibom Power was operational during the grid collapse.

Generation fell further to 44.5MW around 4 am, then rose to 132.29MW an hour later. The grid collapse was confirmed by the Jos Electricity Distribution Company.

Dr. Friday Elijah of JEDC said the outage was due to the national grid collapse at around 2:42 am. He expressed hope for the grid’s restoration.

On February 5, 2024, The PUNCH reported a similar collapse where generation plunged from 2,658.75MW to 59.9MW. Power distributors attributed the blackouts to the grid collapse managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
