Melinda French Gates has made public her decision to step down as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the charitable organization she co-founded alongside her former spouse, Bill Gates, more than two decades ago.
The couple, who ended their 27-year marriage with a divorce filing in 2021, nevertheless affirmed their joint commitment to continuing their philanthropic endeavors.
In a statement shared on X platform on Monday, May 13, 2024, French Gates expressed the weightiness of her choice, emphasizing her immense pride in the foundation’s achievements in tackling global disparities.
Commending the leadership of foundation CEO Mark Suzman and the board of trustees, notably expanded post-announcement of their divorce in May 2021, she heralded the moment as ripe for her to embark on a new phase of philanthropic pursuits.
While she channels some of her investments and charitable contributions through her entity, Pivotal Ventures, which operates outside the nonprofit realm, French Gates remains dedicated to advancing causes close to her heart.
Bill Gates, acknowledging French Gates’ pivotal role in the foundation’s endeavors, conveyed regret at her departure, foreseeing significant contributions to come in her future philanthropic endeavors.
As part of their agreement, French Gates will receive $12.5 billion, funds she intends to channel into initiatives centered on empowering women and supporting families.
The Gates Foundation, boasting an endowment of $75.2 billion as of December 2023, revealed plans in January to allocate $8.6 billion towards its mission throughout 2024.
