Amusan Targets Redemption at Shanghai Diamond League After Xiamen Slip
Set against the backdrop of the International Fastener Show in Shanghai (May 22–24), which spans 42,000 square metres and features 1,000 exhibitors, Nigerian hurdler Tobi Amusan is turning her focus to the upcoming Shanghai Diamond League on May 3, 2025.
After a modest season debut in Xiamen where she finished fourth with a time of 12.74 seconds, Amusan is determined to bounce back stronger. The reigning world champion Danielle Williams won that race with a 12.53s finish, while Grace Stark and Marione Fourie rounded out the top three. Despite missing the podium, Amusan showed flashes of top form, hinting at a strong season ahead.
A three-time Diamond League champion (2021–2023), Amusan remains a formidable force in women’s 100m hurdles. Now under the guidance of renowned coach Glen Mills, she is sharpening her form and mindset to reclaim her place atop the podium.
Shanghai promises stiff competition. Williams, with her 12.53s season best, remains a major threat. Stark, ranked fifth globally, clocked 12.58s in Xiamen and is eyeing improvement. Fourie, ranked 19th, brings a personal best of 12.49s and continues to show progress.
Also in the mix is Devynne Charlton from the Bahamas (PB: 12.44s), USA’s Nia Ali (SB: 13.23s), Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska (PB: 12.37s), and China’s Wu Yanni (SB: 13.00s), each capable of shaking up the rankings.
As one of Asia’s premier athletics meets, the Shanghai Diamond League offers a crucial opportunity for Amusan to gain momentum before the World Championships in Tokyo. With a competitive field and a fast track, all eyes will be on her performance in what could be a turning point in her 2025 campaign.
