Cardinals have begun returning to the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican to continue voting for a new pope as the papal conclave enters its second day.
The first round of voting to elect Pope Francis’s successor took place on Wednesday, but it ended with black smoke rising from the chapel’s chimney, indicating that no cardinal had yet secured the required majority to win.
On the second day, cardinals will cast up to four votes throughout the morning and afternoon, hoping for the sight of white smoke, signaling that a new pope has been chosen.
