Francis Ngannou, criticized for turning down the biggest UFC deal, now signs the best MMA deal ever with equity and boxing rights

Francis Ngannou’s seismic departure from the UFC has sent ripples through the world of mixed martial arts (MMA), marking a pivotal shift as he joins the Professional Fighters League (PFL) ranks. After a contentious split with the UFC, Ngannou, a former heavyweight champion, will exclusively showcase his skills in PFL’s pay-per-view super fight division.
The rift between Ngannou and the UFC surfaced during contract negotiations, where the African fighter’s requests for health insurance and personal sponsorships were rebuffed. UFC President Dana White stripped Ngannou of his heavyweight title in January, setting the stage for his move to PFL.
In a groundbreaking development, Ngannou, at 36, not only stepped into the ring for PFL but also assumed the role of chairman and equity owner in PFL Africa. Expressing his confidence in PFL’s fighter-centric ethos and global vision, Ngannou highlighted his commitment to nurturing MMA talent in Africa through PFL Africa.

Although the deal’s specifics remain undisclosed, Ngannou’s statement affirmed his belief in PFL’s emphasis on putting fighters first and expanding the sport’s reach across Africa.
PFL CEO Peter Murray revealed that Ngannou’s inaugural about under the new banner is slated for early 2024. Murray emphasized that discussions with Ngannou gained momentum when he was free from contractual obligations, indicating the fighter’s pivotal role in PFL’s imminent global expansion plans. Notably, PFL will support Ngannou’s foray into boxing, showcasing a rare flexibility in supporting athletes’ diverse ambitions.
Ngannou’s multifaceted role extends beyond the ring, as he assumes leadership on PFL’s global advisory board, becoming the first active fighter to represent fighters’ interests strategically.
Despite PFL’s distinctive format involving regular seasons, playoffs, and championship events, Ngannou will focus on the planned PPV division, joining other luminaries like Kayla Harrison and Jake Paul.

“This is a game-changing partnership,” Murray declared. He underscored Ngannou’s prowess as an elite fighter and a wise entrepreneur, highlighting the strategic nature of their collaboration.
Ngannou’s journey from adversity to empowerment reflects a broader trend in MMA, with fighters eyeing PFL as a global stage offering unparalleled opportunities. The league’s recent high-profile signings, including Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields and others, pale in comparison to the impact of Ngannou’s move.
As PFL gears up for its next phase of growth, marked by the launch of its pay-per-view venture and global expansion through regional leagues, Ngannou’s arrival signals a monumental shift, promising a new era of dynamism and possibility in combat sports.
