Galatasaray have accused Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho of making “racist statements” following a heated 0-0 draw between the fierce Istanbul rivals.
The club did not specify which remarks they were referring to, and Mourinho has yet to respond publicly. However, reports suggest that the former Real Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Spurs coach said the home bench was “jumping like monkeys” during Monday’s match. He also reportedly repeated his criticism of Turkish referees.
The game was officiated by Slovenia’s Slavko Vincic after both clubs requested a foreign referee for the high-profile encounter.
In an official statement, Galatasaray announced plans to take legal action against the 62-year-old manager.
“Since taking over at Fenerbahce, Jose Mourinho has consistently made derogatory remarks about the Turkish people,” the club stated.
“Today, his comments have gone beyond immorality and have entered the realm of inhumane rhetoric.
“We officially declare our intention to initiate criminal proceedings regarding Mourinho’s racist statements and will file complaints with UEFA and FIFA.
“Additionally, we will closely monitor Fenerbahce’s response, as they claim to uphold ‘exemplary moral values,’ in light of their manager’s disgraceful behaviour.”
Fenerbahce, currently second in the Super Lig and six points behind Galatasaray, have not yet issued a response.
