Grammy-winning South African pop star Tyla has opened up about her collaboration with Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Wizkid, revealing that their song Dynamite was recorded three years ago—long before her breakout moment.
In a recent interview with Capital Xtra in London, Tyla said she had been dancing to the demo in her room for years, waiting for the right time to release it.
“I was new when I linked up with Wizkid. A lot of people didn’t know me. I didn’t expect him to be down for a session, but he was. He liked some of the stuff I played him, and we made Dynamite,” she shared. “I’ve been sitting on the demo for three years, dancing to it every day in my room and hoping one day I would get to drop it.”
Tyla also praised Wizkid for his impact on African music globally.
“Wizkid has done so much for the culture, pushing our music and bringing eyes towards our creatives back home. He is just the best. I don’t think he has one bad song. He’s too good. I admire how talented he is. He has evolved throughout the years.”
Tyla rose to global fame in 2023 with her hit single Water, and in 2024, she made history by winning the first-ever Best African Music Performance award at the 66th Grammys.
