Ex-Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been released by Swiss side FC Zurich after just eight appearances, following concerns over his off-field behaviour.
Mendy, 31, joined Zurich in February on a deal running until summer 2026 after a brief stint at Lorient. However, his contract was terminated by mutual consent just five months in.
Zurich officials reportedly lost patience after Mendy was seen partying just hours after a 4–0 defeat to Basel in April. Head coach Ricardo Moniz publicly criticised his fitness and professionalism, while club president Ancillo Canepa described the signing as “not a happy story.”
A club statement read: “FC Zurich announces that the contract with French defender Benjamin Mendy has been terminated by mutual consent. He is leaving the city club with immediate effect. FCZ wishes Benjamin Mendy all the best for his private and sporting future.”
Mendy had been suspended by Manchester City in 2021 after facing multiple charges of r@pe and s£xual ass@ult. He was fully cleared of all charges by July 2023 and later won an employment tribunal over unpaid wages from the club.
Despite once being a Premier League winner under Pep Guardiola, Mendy’s recent career has struggled to gain momentum. He made just 15 appearances for Lorient before joining Zurich.
