Jose Mourinho has been dismissed by Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahce just two days after the club’s elimination from the Champions League playoffs at the hands of Benfica.
“Our Professional Football First Team’s technical director, Jose Mourinho, who has been carrying out his duties since the 2024-2025 season, has parted ways with us,” the club said in a statement. “We thank him for his efforts for our team until today and wish him success in his future career.”
The former Manchester United boss took charge in June 2024 on a two-year deal, tasked with ending Fenerbahce’s decade-long wait for a league title. Despite winning 26 and drawing six of 36 league games, Mourinho’s side once again fell short, finishing second behind Galatasaray for the fourth straight season with 90 points.
That runners-up spot secured Champions League qualification, and after edging past Feyenoord in the third qualifying round, Fenerbahce fell to Benfica in the decisive playoff.
In total, Mourinho oversaw 62 matches in Istanbul, winning 37 and drawing 14, giving him a 59.7% win rate.
The Portuguese coach’s exit follows a turbulent 12 hours in Turkish football, with Besiktas also parting ways with another former Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, after their Conference League defeat to Lausanne-Sport.
